Parasite Control

Some of the common parasites that animals, especially kittens and puppies, get include hookworm infections, roundworm infections and tapeworm infections.

There are also many diseases that our pets can get that are vector-borne, meaning they are transmitted by mosquitoes, fleas and ticks. Mosquitoes can transmit Heartworm Disease, which when infected, is an expensive and often fatal disease to treat, but one that is very easily prevented. Ticks can transmit many diseases, including Lyme Disease, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Babesia. Unfortunately ticks are very hardy creatures and not just a seasonal problem anymore. Ticks go into hibernation in sub-zero temperatures, but when winter temperatures rise above 4 degrees celsius at any time, ticks re-emerge and are actively looking for their next blood meal.

Many parasites are also zoonotic agents. Zoonosis is an infectious disease that can be transmitted from animals to people. Regular veterinary visits, preventative vaccinations and medications, and good hygiene can go a long way in helping to prevent disease.
